Completed tarmac driveway with silver granite framing, planting-area risers and a matching entrance step on Bawnville Road, Tallaght.

Choosing a driveway contractor involves more than comparing prices and finished photographs. Asking about previous projects, preparation, the installation team and aftercare can help you understand who you are hiring and how your driveway will be constructed.

A useful first conversation should leave you with a clearer understanding of the proposed work, who will carry it out and what happens before, during and after installation.

This guide covers the questions worth asking before you appoint a contractor. For a closer look at the written pricing and specification, read our separate guide to comparing driveway quotations.

Start With These Questions

Your Driveway Contractor Checklist
Question What to Look For
Can I see similar completed projects? Relevant examples showing the surface, preparation and finishing details you are considering.
Who will carry out the installation? A clear explanation of the team involved and who will supervise the work.
What preparation does my driveway need? An assessment of the existing surface, ground conditions and proposed foundations.
How will levels and drainage be managed? A plan for the finished height, driveway falls and where rainwater will go.
Can you provide evidence of insurance? Current documentation relevant to the proposed work.
What is included in the quotation? A written scope identifying materials, preparation, labour and separately priced features.
What warranty and aftercare do you provide? Written terms explaining coverage, conditions and how to raise a concern.
How are payments and changes handled? An agreed payment schedule and a clear process for approving additional work.

1. Can You Show Me Similar Completed Driveways?

Ask for projects that are relevant to your plans. If you are considering resin, look at resin installations. If you want granite borders, a new entrance step or planting-area risers, ask for examples of those details.

Finished photographs are useful, while before and preparation photographs can provide additional context. Together, they help explain what the project involved beyond the visible surface.

Look for descriptions that identify the location, existing driveway and work completed. You can browse our own examples here:

If you would like to view a previous installation, ask the contractor whether a suitable visit can be arranged with the homeowner’s permission.

2. Who Will Actually Install My Driveway?

Find out who will be working at your property and who will be responsible for supervising the installation.

Ask whether the work is carried out by the contractor’s own team or whether other businesses will handle particular stages. You should also know who your main contact will be if a question arises.

At Driveways 4 You, installations are carried out by our own experienced team, with no subcontractors involved. Our team manages the work from preparation through to the finished surface.

3. What Preparation Does My Existing Driveway Need?

Ask the contractor to explain what they have observed at your property and how that affects the proposed work.

Useful questions include:

  • Does the existing surface need to be removed?
  • Can any existing construction be retained, and why?
  • What groundwork and sub-base construction are proposed?
  • How will unsuitable ground or unexpected conditions be addressed?
  • What removal and disposal work is included?

A recommendation should relate to your driveway rather than relying on a single construction approach for every property.

Our guide to driveway settlement and sub-base preparation explains why the foundation deserves attention alongside the chosen finish.

4. How Will You Deal With Levels and Drainage?

Discuss existing problems during the site visit, including puddles, awkward steps, sunken sections or water collecting near the house.

Ask how the proposed finished surface will meet doorways, garage entrances, paths and adjoining areas. If drainage work is proposed, ask where the water will go and whether that work is included in the quotation.

It is also useful to understand whether existing drainage channels or covers will be retained, adjusted or replaced.

Read our driveway drainage guide for more questions to raise during the assessment.

5. Which Materials Are You Proposing?

Ask for enough detail to understand what you are choosing. A broad description such as “resin driveway” or “block paving” does not identify the complete specification.

The information will differ by surface:

  • Tarmac: Ask about the proposed surfacing specification and supporting construction.
  • Resin: Ask which resin system and aggregate blend will be used, together with the proposed base.
  • Gravel: Confirm the selected product, stone grading, edging and supporting construction.
  • Block paving: Confirm the range, colour, block specification, laying pattern and borders.

For colours and finishes, ask to see an appropriate physical sample where available. Photographs and screens are useful for narrowing down choices, but they may not represent the material exactly.

6. Can You Provide Evidence of Insurance?

Ask for current evidence of insurance relevant to the proposed installation. Check that the business details match the contractor you are appointing and that the documentation is in date.

If something is unclear, ask for an explanation before the work begins. A statement on a website is a starting point; documentation gives you something specific to review.

7. What Will My Written Quotation Cover?

The quotation should describe the work you have discussed, including the preparation, selected surface and agreed finishing details.

Check whether it identifies:

  • The driveway area and proposed layout.
  • Removal of the existing surface and disposal requirements.
  • Ground preparation and supporting construction.
  • The selected surfacing materials.
  • Edging, borders, steps and paths.
  • Drainage work and adjustments to existing features.
  • Installation labour and final site clearance.
  • The total price and how VAT is treated.

Ask which items are excluded or provisional. Our driveway quotation comparison guide provides a more detailed checklist.

8. What Happens if Additional Work Is Needed?

Some conditions only become apparent after the existing driveway has been removed. Before starting, agree how unexpected work will be explained, priced and approved.

Ask who will contact you, what information you will receive and how any change to the agreed price or schedule will be recorded.

Keeping changes clear helps both parties understand what has been authorised and how the project scope has developed.

9. When Will the Work Start, and How Will Access Be Managed?

Ask for an expected start date and an indication of the installation schedule. Find out which circumstances could affect those dates and how updates will be communicated.

Discuss practical arrangements before the team arrives:

  • Where should you park while the driveway is being installed?
  • How will pedestrian access to the house be maintained?
  • Will deliveries or machinery affect a shared entrance?
  • When should bins, furniture or other items be moved?
  • Will any stages require you to stay off the new surface?

Our driveway installation process guide explains the main stages to expect.

10. What Are the Payment Arrangements?

Agree the payment schedule before work begins. Ask whether a deposit is required, when further payments become due and what each stage relates to.

Make sure you understand the agreed payment methods and keep the quotation, invoices, receipts and any approved changes together.

If the proposed terms are unclear or differ from what you discussed, resolve those points before committing.

11. What Does the Warranty Cover?

Ask for the warranty terms in writing. The length of a warranty is only one part of understanding it.

Check:

  • Who provides the warranty.
  • What workmanship or materials it covers.
  • When the cover begins.
  • What conditions or exclusions apply.
  • Whether any maintenance requirements must be followed.
  • How to report a concern and what happens next.

Where a manufacturer’s product warranty is mentioned, ask how it relates to the installer’s workmanship warranty. They may cover different aspects of the completed installation.

Driveways 4 You offers a seven-year warranty. Ask us for the written terms applicable to your proposed project so that the coverage and conditions are clear.

12. What Aftercare Will You Provide?

Before handover, ask when the driveway can be walked on and when vehicles can return. Follow the guidance given for your particular installation.

You should also know how to clean the surface, what products or activities to avoid and who to contact if you notice a problem.

A Real Project: Bawnville Road, Tallaght

Our Bawnville Road driveway project illustrates the value of looking at the preparation as well as the finished photograph.

The old cobblelock had become uneven and separated, allowing weeds to grow through the gaps. It was removed before the ground was prepared and a new sub-base installed with attention to the falls.

Silver granite blocks framed the driveway, with matching risers defining the planting area and a new silver granite entrance step. The driveway was then finished in tarmac.

The before, preparation and completed images help explain the scope of the work and how the visible finish connects with the underlying construction.

Before You Appoint Your Contractor

You should feel comfortable with the proposed work and know who to contact throughout the installation. Take time to resolve unanswered questions and keep a written record of the agreed specification, price, payment schedule and warranty terms.

A useful contractor discussion gives you a clear picture of the complete project, from removing the old surface to caring for the new driveway.
