Quality From the Ground Up

Our Approach to Tarmac Installation

A well-installed tarmac driveway depends on the work beneath the surface as much as the final finish. Before installation, we assess the existing driveway, ground conditions, access and drainage requirements to plan the preparation needed for your property.

Our team removes unsuitable material where required, prepares and compacts the foundation, and sets the levels and edging before laying the surface. Careful attention to these stages helps create a driveway suited to the demands of everyday parking and access.

We install SMA tarmac driveways and can combine the surface with granite blocks, decorative paving borders and entrance steps. These finishing details help define the driveway and bring the entrance together with the surrounding property.

From the first site visit to the final finishing touches, Driveways 4 You provides clear communication, practical advice and an installation carried out entirely by our own team.

Looking After Your Driveway

Tarmac Driveway Maintenance

Regular sweeping, gentle cleaning and prompt attention to spills can help keep your tarmac driveway looking its best. Keeping drainage clear and checking for signs of wear are also useful parts of ongoing care.

01

Regular Sweeping

Sweep away leaves, soil and loose debris to keep the driveway tidy and prevent material building up around borders and drainage channels.

02

Gentle Cleaning

Use a soft brush and water for routine cleaning. Ask us for advice before using a pressure washer, strong chemicals or cleaning products that may affect the surface.

03

Deal With Oil & Fuel Spills

Attend to oil and fuel spills promptly. Absorb the spill rather than washing it into drains, and seek advice on a suitable cleaning method for your tarmac surface.

04

Check Drainage & Surface Condition

Keep drainage channels clear and check occasionally for cracks, loose edges or areas of standing water. Getting advice early can help you address small issues before they develop further.

Simple ongoing care can make a big difference.

Follow the aftercare advice provided when your driveway is completed, including when to start parking on the new surface. If you are unsure about cleaning, spills or signs of wear, contact Driveways 4 You for guidance.

Included

Excavation & Standard Sub-Base Are Included

Our €50–€95 per m² guide covers a complete installation with standard ground preparation. It is not simply a price for laying a new surface over an existing driveway.

The foundation requirements are assessed for your property. Ground conditions, the condition of the existing driveway and the intended use determine the preparation needed. If unusual ground conditions require work beyond the standard build-up, this will be identified in your quotation.

Example Costs

Tarmac Driveway Prices by Size

These examples use our €50–€95 per m² guide rate and include standard preparation. They help you plan a budget before arranging a site visit.

Driveway Size At €50/m² At €95/m² Indicative Price Range
20m² €1,000 €1,900 €1,000 – €1,900
30m² €1,500 €2,850 €1,500 – €2,850

100m² €5,000 €9,500 €5,000 – €9,500

These figures are arithmetic examples, not fixed quotations. Small or awkward sites may have higher costs per square metre because of access and setup requirements. Granite edging, additional drainage, bespoke features and non-standard ground works are priced separately.

Quoted On-Site
Understanding Your Quote

What Affects the Cost of a Tarmac Driveway?

The area gives a starting point, but the work required at your property determines the final quotation.

Driveway Size & Layout

The total area influences the overall price. Narrow sections, curves and an irregular layout can also affect the time and work involved.

Existing Surface & Removal

Removing concrete, old tarmac or garden areas involves different preparation requirements. The amount of excavation and material to remove affects the project.

Ground Conditions & Foundations

Soft ground, settlement or an unsuitable existing foundation may require additional work beyond the standard sub-base construction.

Access & Working Space

Access for machinery, deliveries and removal of excavated materials affects how the installation can be carried out.

Levels & Drainage

The driveway must work with entrances, existing paths and surrounding levels. Additional drainage or substantial changes in level are assessed separately.

Surface Specification & Finishing Details

The agreed tarmac construction, expected vehicle use, edging, steps and connecting paths all contribute to the final scope and price.

Understanding the Work Required

Complete Replacement or Tarmac Resurfacing?

A complete replacement involves excavation and preparation of the foundation before the new tarmac is installed. Resurfacing involves retaining a suitable existing construction and laying a new surface over it.

Resurfacing is only an option where the existing driveway is suitable. Its condition, levels, drainage and available clearance at doors and entrances need to be assessed. Covering an unsuitable base does not resolve the underlying problem.

Our published €50–€95 per m² guide includes excavation and standard sub-base construction. Any resurfacing option should be assessed and quoted for its own scope rather than compared directly with a complete replacement.

Before Comparing Prices

What Should a Tarmac Driveway Quote Include?

Compare the scope of work as well as the headline price. Ask each contractor to explain:

  • Measured area: how many square metres the quotation covers.
  • Excavation and removal: which existing materials will be removed and whether disposal is included.
  • Foundation: the proposed sub-base construction and any additional ground preparation.
  • Tarmac specification: the proposed material, layers and compacted thicknesses for your driveway.
  • Edging: what edge treatment is included and whether decorative borders cost extra.
  • Drainage: how water will be managed and which drainage works are included.
  • Total price and extras: the total payable and any separately priced features.
  • Installation and aftercare: who carries out the work, the expected schedule and when the driveway can be used.

A lower quotation may reflect a different scope, retained foundations or simpler finishing details. Establish what each price covers before deciding which offers the best value for your property.

Comparing Your Options

Tarmac or Resin: How Do Installation Prices Compare?

Our published installation guides provide a starting point for comparing the two surfaces. Each option still requires a quotation based on your site and chosen design.

Surface Guide Price per m² Example for 50m²
Tarmac €50 – €95 €2,500 – €4,750
Resin Bound €150 – €200 €7,500 – €10,000

Tarmac offers a lower starting installation cost within our published ranges and a dark finish that works well with granite or paving borders. Resin bound provides a decorative aggregate finish with a wider choice of colours.

Both guides include excavation and standard sub-base preparation. Additional drainage, decorative edging and bespoke features need to be considered when comparing the final quotations.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Tarmac Driveway Questions,
Answered.

Answers to common questions about tarmac driveway costs, installation, preparation, drainage, edging and ongoing care.

How much does a tarmac driveway cost in Dublin?

A complete tarmac driveway installation from Driveways 4 You typically costs between €50 and €95 per square metre. Our guide price includes excavation, removal of excavated material, standard sub-base build-up, tarmac materials and installation by our own experienced team. The final price depends on the driveway size, ground conditions, access, levels and design. Granite borders and additional drainage are quoted separately where required.

How much should I budget for a 50m² tarmac driveway?

Using our €50–€95 per m² guide, the indicative cost is €2,500–€4,750, including excavation and standard preparation. Separately quoted edging, additional drainage or non-standard ground works can increase the total. Your site quotation will confirm the work required and the overall price.

Will a larger driveway cost less per square metre?

It can, because some setup and delivery costs are spread across a larger area. However, access, ground conditions, layout and the agreed specification also affect the rate. We assess these factors together when preparing your quotation.

How can I estimate the area of my driveway?

For a rectangular driveway, multiply its length by its width in metres. For an irregular layout, divide it into simpler sections and add their areas together. We will check the measurements during the site assessment.

Can you price my driveway from photographs?

Photographs and approximate measurements are useful starting information. A site assessment allows us to check the area, access, existing surface and preparation requirements before providing an accurate quotation.

Can you lay tarmac over an existing driveway?

In some cases, an existing driveway may be suitable for resurfacing. We first assess its condition, foundations, levels and drainage. Adding a new surface will not resolve underlying movement, weak foundations or drainage problems. Where the existing construction is unsuitable, we recommend removing it and preparing a suitable base for the new driveway.

Why is the preparation beneath a tarmac driveway important?

The finished tarmac surface relies on the construction beneath it for support. Excavation, a suitable compacted sub-base and correctly prepared levels help create a stable foundation for everyday vehicle use. We assess the existing ground and proposed use of the driveway before deciding on the preparation required for your property.

How long does it take to install a tarmac driveway?

The schedule depends on the size of the driveway, excavation requirements, access, drainage and finishing details such as borders or steps. Weather and material availability can also affect the timing. Following a site visit, we can explain the stages involved and give you an expected installation schedule.

When can I park on my new tarmac driveway?

We will advise you when your driveway is ready for vehicles once the surface has been installed and cooled sufficiently. The waiting period depends on the material used and weather conditions, so follow the guidance we give you for your installation. We will also explain any precautions needed during the early period of use.

Does a tarmac driveway need drainage?

Yes, drainage needs to be considered as part of the driveway design. We assess the slope, existing drainage and surrounding levels to establish how surface water should be managed. Where needed, drainage channels or other measures can be included in the proposal. Any additional drainage work is identified and priced in your quotation.

Can I have granite edging or paving borders, and are they included in the price?

Yes. Granite edging and paving borders can frame the tarmac surface and help define the driveway, paths and adjoining garden areas. We can discuss colours, border widths and finishing details during the site visit so the design complements your home.

Granite edging and decorative paving borders are quoted separately from the standard tarmac installation guide price. Their cost depends on the selected materials, the length of the border and the installation detail.

Can you change the shape or levels of my driveway?

We can assess changes to the driveway layout, parking area, paths and levels as part of the proposed installation. The options depend on the available space, access, boundaries, drainage and the relationship between the driveway and your entrance. We will explain what is practical during the site visit and include the agreed work in your quotation.

How do I maintain a tarmac driveway?

Sweep away leaves, soil and loose debris, and keep drainage channels clear. Deal with oil or fuel spills promptly and check with us before using strong chemicals or aggressive cleaning methods. If you notice damage, contact us for advice so we can assess the cause and recommend suitable care or repair.

Do you use subcontractors for tarmac driveway installations?

No. Our tarmac driveway installations are carried out by our own experienced in-house team. We manage the work from excavation and preparation through to the tarmac surface, borders and final finishing details.

Do you install tarmac driveways throughout Dublin?

Yes. Driveways 4 You installs tarmac driveways throughout Dublin and surrounding areas. We can arrange a site visit to assess your existing driveway, measure the proposed area and discuss preparation, drainage and finishing options for your property.
