Tarmac: a Clean, Dark Finish

Tarmac creates a straightforward appearance that works well with many styles of home. Its dark surface can provide an attractive contrast with granite edging, lighter paving borders and natural stone steps.

If you prefer a simple driveway design, the edging and entrance details can add definition without introducing several different surface colours.

Resin-Bound: More Choice of Colour

Resin-bound surfacing combines stone aggregate with resin before the mixture is laid and trowelled onto a suitable base. The stones are bound together, creating a continuous finish rather than a loose gravel surface.

A resin-bound surface can allow water to pass through it, but the supporting base and underlying layers must also be suitable if water is intended to drain through the full construction. Resin laid over an impermeable base still needs an appropriate drainage design.

Conventional tarmac generally directs water across the surface using carefully established levels and falls towards a suitable drainage arrangement.

During your site visit, ask how water will be managed on your particular driveway. Neither surface should be chosen on the assumption that drainage will take care of itself.

Which Is Easier to Maintain?

Both surfaces need routine care. Low maintenance does not mean that a driveway can be left indefinitely without cleaning or inspection.
