Completed gravel driveway with natural stone framing at Monalea Grove Firhouse Dublin

Gravel and resin-bound driveways both offer a natural aggregate appearance, but they behave differently in everyday use. Gravel is a loose stone surface, while resin-bound combines aggregate with resin to create a bound finish. This guide compares costs, maintenance, appearance and practical considerations to help you choose for your home.

Gravel or Resin: What Is the Main Difference?

On a gravel driveway, the surface stones remain loose. They can move under tyres and foot traffic, so the design needs suitable edging and occasional redistribution of the stone.

For a resin-bound driveway, aggregate is mixed with resin before being laid and trowelled over a suitable prepared base. The finished appearance retains the visible stone texture within a bound surface.

Here, we are comparing loose gravel with resin-bound surfacing. Resin-bonded is a different system, explained in our resin-bound versus resin-bonded guide.

Gravel and Resin-Bound Driveways Compared

Key differences when choosing your driveway surface
Consideration Gravel Resin-Bound
Surface Loose aggregate. Aggregate mixed with resin and laid as a bound finish.
Our installation guide price €40–€70 per m² €150–€200 per m²
Appearance A loose stone finish with different gravel choices. A trowelled aggregate finish with a choice of colour blends.
Routine care Debris removal, weed control and redistribution of displaced gravel. Sweeping, suitable washing and attention to spills.
Borders Important for defining the driveway and retaining loose stone. Coordinate with the surface, entrances and adjoining features.
Drainage Must be assessed as part of the complete construction. Must be assessed as part of the complete construction.

Which Costs Less to Install?

Gravel has the lower installation price within our published guide ranges. Driveways 4 You typically installs gravel driveways for €40–€70 per m² and resin-bound driveways for €150–€200 per m².

The gravel guide includes site preparation, standard sub-base construction, the selected gravel surface and installation labour. The resin guide includes excavation, preparation, standard sub-base construction, the resin-bound surface and installation labour.

Each quotation still needs to identify the actual removal work, drainage, borders and finishing details required at your property.

Example budgets using Driveways 4 You guide prices
Driveway Size Gravel at €40–€70/m² Resin-Bound at €150–€200/m²
20m² €800–€1,400 €3,000–€4,000
30m² €1,200–€2,100 €4,500–€6,000
40m² €1,600–€2,800 €6,000–€8,000
50m² €2,000–€3,500 €7,500–€10,000
60m² €2,400–€4,200 €9,000–€12,000

These figures are budgeting calculations rather than fixed quotations. Access, ground conditions, drainage and bespoke features can change the total.

Choosing the Appearance

Consider the surface alongside your brickwork, render, windows, entrance step and planting. Compare physical samples at the property rather than relying entirely on photographs.

Our gravel service offers five finishes: grey limestone chippings, Ballylusk gravel, golden gravel, granite chippings and quartz gravel.

Our resin service displays 48 colour blends, giving you different combinations to consider alongside borders and garden features.

A contrasting granite frame can define either surface. Discuss the border and driveway together so the complete layout has a coordinated appearance.

Parking, Turning and Everyday Access

Think about how you use the driveway throughout the day. Frequent turning, the route to the front door, moving bins and access with a pushchair or mobility aid are all worth discussing during the site visit.

Loose gravel can be displaced during use, particularly where vehicles turn. A resin-bound surface holds its aggregate within the bound finish, although its suitability still depends on the specification and supporting construction.

If your driveway slopes, ask how the proposed surface will perform on that gradient. Where gravel stabilisation is proposed, request its specification and cost rather than assuming it is included.

For particular access requirements, ask to assess a representative surface before choosing.

Both Options Need Suitable Foundations

A decorative surface cannot replace the foundation work required for the proposed driveway. The existing construction, ground conditions and intended vehicle use need to be assessed before installation.

For gravel, distinguish a complete new driveway from a surface top-up over an existing suitable foundation. For resin, distinguish a complete installation from an overlay onto a retained base.

Our driveway sub-base preparation guide explains why movement and unevenness should be investigated before replacing the visible finish.

What About Drainage?

Do not choose either surface on the assumption that its name alone guarantees effective drainage.

The surface, supporting layers, ground conditions and planned water-management arrangements work together. Ask your installer to explain where water will go and whether additional drainage is required.

The design should consider entrances, adjoining paths, garden levels and the boundary with the public footpath. Any proposed drainage work should be clearly identified in the quotation.

How Much Maintenance Does Gravel Need?

Regular care includes removing leaves and debris, dealing with weeds and raking displaced stone back into position where required.

Check the edging and watch for persistent ruts or soft areas. Repeatedly adding gravel may conceal a problem without establishing its cause.

A top-up may be appropriate over time, but first confirm the compatible stone and quantity required. Avoid adding so much loose material that the surface becomes difficult to use.

How Much Maintenance Does Resin Need?

Resin-bound driveways need sweeping, suitable cleaning and prompt attention to spills. Follow the aftercare supplied for the installed system.

Ask for advice before using unfamiliar chemicals or cleaning equipment. Report cracks, surface loss or movement rather than trying to conceal them with a treatment.

Our resin driveway maintenance guide explains routine care and the information to provide when seeking advice.

Real Gravel Example: Monalea Grove, Firhouse

At our Monalea Grove gravel driveway project, the old worn concrete surface was removed and the foundation prepared for the new driveway.

Natural stone paving and blocks framed the gravel, with granite risers defining a planting area. A natural stone pathway led to a granite entrance step.

The project shows how the loose stone finish can be combined with more defined pedestrian routes and entrance features. These additional details should be considered separately when budgeting for a similar design.

Real Resin Example: Diswellstown, Castleknock

Our Diswellstown resin driveway project replaced old cobblelock that had loosened and spread apart.

The work included sub-base preparation, suitable falls and a compacted tarmac base below the new granite frame. Granite risers were installed around the planting area.

The customer's chosen Anchor Bay resin-bound finish completed the installation. The project photographs show the preparation and detailing behind the finished appearance.

Which Should You Choose?

Consider gravel if you prefer a loose stone appearance, want to explore the lower installation guide range and are comfortable with occasional redistribution and surface upkeep.

Consider resin-bound if you prefer a bound aggregate finish and its colour options, and your budget allows for the proposed complete installation.

Neither choice should be made on appearance or price alone. Compare the proposed construction, practical access, drainage, borders and ongoing care at your particular property.
