Anchor Bay resin-bound driveway with granite framing in Diswellstown Castleknock

Resin-bound and resin-bonded driveways are different surfacing systems. Resin-bound combines stone and resin before laying, while resin-bonded involves scattering stone onto a coating of resin. This guide explains the differences in appearance, installation and drainage, and what to check when choosing a resin driveway for your home.

Resin-Bound vs Resin-Bonded: The Main Difference

The distinction is how the stone and resin are brought together. With a resin-bound surface, the aggregate is mixed with resin before the mixture is spread and trowelled into place. With a resin-bonded surface, resin is applied to the base first and aggregate is scattered onto it.

Driveways 4 You installs resin-bound driveways using DALTEX UVR resin. When requesting a quotation, ask the installer to identify the system clearly rather than describing the proposed surface simply as a “resin driveway”.

Resin-Bound and Resin-Bonded Compared

Key differences between resin-bound and resin-bonded surfacing
Feature Resin-Bound Resin-Bonded
Application Stone and resin are mixed together before laying. Stone is scattered onto resin applied to the base.
Appearance A trowelled aggregate finish. A more pronounced gravel-like texture.
Water through the surface The open structure allows water through the resin-bound layer. The bonded system is non-permeable.
Overall drainage Depends on the base, sub-base and drainage design. Requires suitable surface-water drainage arrangements.
Specification to request Resin product, aggregate blend, laying depth and base construction. Bonding product, aggregate specification and base preparation.

What Goes Beneath a Resin Driveway?

Choosing the visible finish is only one part of planning an installation. The existing surface, ground conditions, expected vehicle use, levels and drainage need to be assessed together.

A driveway with movement, settlement or an unsuitable foundation needs its underlying problems addressed. A decorative finish should not be treated as a substitute for sound construction beneath it.

During a site assessment, ask which parts of the existing driveway can be retained and which need to be removed. Your quotation should explain the proposed preparation and construction.

Does a Resin-Bound Driveway Need Drainage?

Yes, drainage still needs to be designed. The resin-bound layer can allow water through, but the base beneath it may restrict where that water can go. A permeable surface layer alone does not make the complete driveway permeable.

Ask your installer how water will move through or away from the proposed construction. This matters particularly around doorways, garage entrances, adjoining paths and the boundary with the public footpath.

The quotation should identify the intended falls and any drainage channels or other drainage work required for the property.

Choosing Colours and Granite Detailing

For homeowners considering our resin-bound installations, the aggregate colour can be coordinated with brickwork, render, windows and surrounding garden features.

We display 48 resin colour blends on our resin driveway service page. Use these as a starting point, then confirm your preferred finish with a physical sample, as photographs and screen colours can vary.

Granite framing, entrance steps and planting-area risers can bring definition to the layout. Consider these features alongside the surface colour so that the driveway and its surroundings work together.

A Resin-Bound Driveway Example in Castleknock

Our Diswellstown, Castleknock driveway project illustrates the preparation and detailing behind a completed resin-bound installation.

The old cobblelock had loosened and spread, allowing weeds to grow between the blocks. It was removed before the sub-base and falls were prepared for the new driveway.

A compacted tarmac base was installed below the finished level of the granite frame, allowing for the resin surface above. Granite risers were also installed around the planting area.

The customer's chosen Anchor Bay finish completed the driveway. The project photographs show the existing surface, base preparation and finished installation, helping homeowners understand more than the final appearance alone.

How Do the Costs Compare?

Compare quotations for the complete work required at your property. A price for applying a finish over a suitable retained base cannot be compared directly with a quotation that includes excavation and a new foundation.

Our 2026 resin-bound driveway guide price is €150–€200 per m², including excavation, preparation, standard sub-base construction, the resin-bound surface and installation labour.

For example, this gives an indicative budget of €7,500–€10,000 for 50m², before separately quoted features. Decorative inlays, granite kerb edging, additional drainage and other bespoke work can affect the final total.

Read our resin driveway cost guide for Dublin for size-based examples and a fuller explanation of the quotation process. These figures apply to our resin-bound service and should not be treated as a resin-bonded price guide.

What Should You Ask Before Accepting a Quote?

A clear specification helps you understand exactly what you are buying. Ask the installer:

  • Which system is proposed? Confirm whether it is resin-bound or resin-bonded.
  • Which materials will be used? Request the resin product and aggregate specification.
  • What preparation is included? Confirm surface removal, excavation and foundation work.
  • What is the proposed base? Ask why it is suitable for the surface and expected vehicle use.
  • How will drainage work? Request an explanation of the complete construction and water-management arrangements.
  • What finishing details are included? Check borders, steps, planting risers and adjoining paths.
  • Who will install it? Confirm who is responsible for each stage.
  • What aftercare is provided? Ask when the driveway can be used and how it should be maintained.

Appearance Does Not Replace a Written Specification

Photographs are useful for discussing colours and layouts, but they cannot confirm the materials, foundation or drainage beneath a driveway.

Ask for the agreed system and installation scope in writing. Keep the quotation and aftercare instructions so you have a clear record of what was installed and how to look after it.
