Completed tarmac driveway with silver granite framing and entrance step on Bawnville Road Tallaght

Comparing driveway quotes means comparing the complete installation, not just the final price. Excavation, foundations, surface materials, drainage, edging and finishing details can vary between proposals. This guide explains what to check so you can make an informed decision for your property.

Start With the Same Project Brief

Give each contractor the same description of what you want. Identify the driveway area, preferred surface, parking requirements and any paths, steps or planting areas to include.

Explain what concerns you about the existing driveway, such as unevenness, difficult maintenance or water collecting after rain. Photographs can help introduce the project, but the proposed work should reflect an assessment of the property.

If one quotation covers a larger area or includes additional features, its total cannot be compared directly with a simpler proposal.

Driveway Quotation Checklist

What to establish before comparing installation prices
Item What to Check
Measured area The square metres covered and whether paths or separate areas are included.
Existing surface What will be removed and what construction will be retained.
Excavation and waste The preparation proposed and whether removal of excavated materials is included.
Foundation The proposed sub-base materials, compacted depths and preparation method.
Surface specification The actual paving or surfacing product and installation requirements.
Levels and drainage The intended falls, collection points and destination of surface water.
Finishing details Borders, edging, steps, paths and planting-area features.
Total payable The VAT position, payment arrangements and separately priced items.
Completion and aftercare The expected schedule, handover instructions and written warranty terms.

Confirm the Driveway Measurements

Ask how much area the quotation covers and whether the figure includes adjoining paths, entrance bands or other paved sections.

A price per square metre is useful only when you know the measured area and what that rate includes. A quotation for 40m² and one for 50m² may describe different layouts even if they concern the same property.

A simple sketch showing the agreed boundaries can help prevent uncertainty about where the work starts and finishes.

Understand What Will Be Removed

Identify the existing surfaces to be taken up, including concrete, tarmac, paving or garden areas. Ask how excavated materials will be removed and whether disposal is included in the total.

If part of the existing construction is being retained, the proposal should explain which part and why it is considered suitable.

A complete replacement and an overlay involve different scopes. Ask for that distinction to be clear before comparing the prices.

Ask About the Foundation Beneath the Surface

Descriptions such as “prepare ground” or “install new base” leave room for interpretation. Ask the contractor to describe the proposed construction and how it relates to the ground conditions and expected vehicle use.

The quotation should identify the intended sub-base and relevant compacted depths. These requirements should come from the site assessment and selected system rather than a single specification applied to every property.

Read our driveway foundation and settlement guide for questions to ask when the existing surface has moved or become uneven.

Check the Surface Specification

A surface name alone does not describe every part of an installation. Ask for the product and construction details needed to identify the proposed finish.

Questions to ask about the selected surface
Surface Details to Confirm
Tarmac The proposed material, layers, compacted thicknesses and edge details.
Resin-Bound The resin product, aggregate blend, laying depth and supporting base.
Block Paving The paving range, block dimensions, colour, pattern, bedding and jointing.
Gravel The stone type, size, proposed surface depth and retention details.

For resin, confirm whether the proposal is resin-bound or resin-bonded. Our comparison of the two resin systems explains the distinction.

Make Drainage Part of the Discussion

Ask where rainwater will go and what work is included to achieve that. Discuss entrances, garage doors, adjoining paths and surrounding levels.

If a drainage channel is proposed, ask about its outlet and onward drainage arrangement. If the construction is described as permeable, request an explanation of the complete system.

Our driveway drainage guide provides a checklist covering falls, channels and foundations.

Identify Borders, Steps and Other Features

Finishing details can account for meaningful differences between quotations. Compare the materials, dimensions and extent of each feature.

For example, a narrow border and a broad entrance band are different amounts of work. A planting-area riser, a new entrance step and a connecting pathway should each be clearly identified where included.

Confirm the selected materials alongside physical samples where possible. Keep the agreed names and finishes with the quotation.

Real Example: Bawnville Road, Tallaght

Our Bawnville Road driveway project involved more than laying a new tarmac surface.

The existing uneven cobblelock was removed before sub-base preparation and the establishment of suitable falls. New silver granite blocks framed the driveway, with planting-area risers and a matching entrance step.

When comparing a proposal for a similar transformation, these elements should be visible in the scope. A surface-only quotation would describe a different project.

The project photographs illustrate the work completed; they are not a published price quotation for another property.

Use Guide Prices as a Starting Point

Driveways 4 You publishes the following installation guide ranges:

2026 Dublin driveway installation guide ranges
Surface Guide Price per m² Detailed Guide
Tarmac €50–€95 Tarmac installation costs
Resin-Bound €150–€200 Resin driveway costs
Block Paving €65–€120 Block paving costs
Gravel €40–€70 Gravel driveway costs

These are budgeting ranges rather than fixed quotations. Read each guide for its inclusions and separately priced features. The final quotation depends on the actual site and agreed installation.

Confirm the Total Price and Payment Arrangements

Ask for the total payable and a clear statement of whether VAT is included. Establish which items are fixed, which are allowances and which require a separate quotation.

Agree any deposit and payment stages before work begins. Ask what each payment relates to and retain the quotation, invoices and payment records.

If two quotations differ substantially, ask each contractor to explain the scope rather than assuming the difference reflects quality alone.

Agree How Changes Will Be Handled

Existing ground conditions are not always fully visible before excavation. Ask how unexpected findings will be communicated and how any proposed change will be priced.

Agree a process for recording changes to materials, layout or additional work. The revised scope and price should be clear before the change proceeds.

The same applies if you request an extra path, a larger planting area or a different border after the original quotation.

Know Who Will Carry Out the Work

Confirm the business responsible for the installation and who will be your point of contact. Ask who manages the preparation, surfacing and finishing stages.

Driveways 4 You carries out installations using our own experienced in-house team, with no subcontractors involved.

Discuss access, parking arrangements, deliveries and the expected programme. Ask how weather or other site conditions may affect the schedule.

Request Written Warranty and Aftercare Information

Ask for the applicable warranty terms, including what is covered and how to report an issue. Distinguish any material warranty from cover relating to installation work.

At handover, confirm when the driveway can be walked on or parked on and how it should be cleaned and maintained.

Keep the selected product details, quotation, agreed changes and aftercare instructions together for future reference.

A Final Check Before Accepting

  • Does every quotation cover the same area and layout?
  • Is removal and waste disposal clearly described?
  • Is the foundation specification explained?
  • Are the surface materials identified?
  • Are levels and drainage included in the proposal?
  • Are borders, steps and paths clearly itemised?
  • Is the total payable and VAT position clear?
  • Are payment stages and changes agreed?
  • Do you understand the warranty and aftercare arrangements?
