Kilsaran Black Corrib block paving with a contrasting silver granite border in Scholarstown Dublin

A block paving driveway’s appearance comes from the combination of paving, laying pattern and border design. The layout also needs to suit the selected product and how the driveway will be used. This guide explains the main choices and what to agree before installation.

Start With the Driveway Layout

Before choosing a pattern, consider the shape of the driveway, parking spaces and the route to the front door. Identify any steps, paths, planting areas or existing features that will remain.

A simple sketch helps establish the main paved area and where borders will sit. It also gives you a way to discuss changes before materials are ordered.

The pattern should work with this layout rather than being selected from a small photograph alone.

Common Block Paving Patterns

Pattern options to discuss with your installer
Pattern Appearance What to Confirm
45-Degree Herringbone An interlocking arrangement set diagonally to the agreed reference line. Compatible block dimensions, driveway use and cuts around the perimeter.
90-Degree Herringbone An interlocking arrangement aligned squarely with the chosen reference line. Product suitability and how the pattern meets entrances and borders.
Stretcher Bond Offset rows creating a more linear appearance. Manufacturer approval for the intended traffic and turning movements.
Multi-Size Layout An arrangement using compatible blocks in different sizes. The approved laying pattern and supplied size proportions.
Basketweave or Stack Bond Decorative arrangements with paired blocks or aligned joints. Do not assume suitability for vehicles; check the specific system guidance.

Herringbone for Driveways

Kilsaran identifies herringbone as an effective pattern for resisting movement under heavier traffic and turning loads. Both 45-degree and 90-degree arrangements are available with suitable products.

The choice between them affects the visual direction of the paving. Discuss which line the pattern will follow, such as the house frontage, driveway entrance or a principal border.

A suitable pattern does not replace the need for proper foundations, edging and installation.

Stretcher Bond and Multi-Size Paving

Stretcher bond creates offset rows, while multi-size products can offer layouts using several compatible block dimensions.

These choices need to be checked against the manufacturer’s instructions for the actual product and intended use. A pattern suitable for a garden path should not automatically be carried into a vehicle parking area.

Ask to see the proposed laying diagram where the arrangement is more complex. Confirm whether the same pattern will continue into adjoining paths or change at a border.

Choosing the Paving Colour

Compare paving samples beside your brickwork, render, windows and entrance step. Decide whether you want the driveway to blend with those features or create a clear contrast.

Look at the overall blend rather than one individual block. Where several tones are present, ask how the supplied materials will be distributed across the installation.

Photographs can introduce an option, but physical samples are a better basis for agreeing the selected colour and texture.

Traditional or Contemporary Finish?

Block shape, edge profile, texture and colour all contribute to the design. An aged appearance and a smoother finish can create different effects even when the overall colour is similar.

Consider the house and surrounding garden together. A period property does not require one fixed paving style, just as a modern house does not require a dark surface.

Choose a combination you like at the scale of the complete entrance, including walls, planting and paths.

Planning a Contrasting Border

A border can define the driveway outline and separate the main paving from paths, planting or other surfaces.

Compare the proposed border material with the main blocks before making a decision. A pale border around darker paving creates a different emphasis from two closely related tones.

Agree the border width and number of rows. These details influence both the appearance and the quantity of material required.

Borders and Edge Restraints Are Different Details

A decorative border describes the visible design. The installation also needs the support and restraint required by the selected paving system.

Ask how the perimeter will be constructed rather than assuming the presence of a contrasting row provides all necessary support.

If an existing driveway has spread or become uneven, have the underlying cause assessed. Our driveway settlement guide explains the questions to ask.

Entrances, Curves and Cutting

The driveway shape affects how the pattern meets its boundaries. Narrow sections, curves and features such as inspection covers or steps need to be considered during layout planning.

Ask where cuts will occur and how the pattern will be balanced around prominent features. It is easier to discuss these details before laying begins.

Where a border changes direction or width, show that on the agreed layout so the finished design is clear.

Real Example: Scholarstown, Dublin

Our Scholarstown block paving project combined Kilsaran Black Corrib paving with a contrasting silver granite border.

The existing concrete driveway was removed and the ground prepared before installation. The selected paving and border were chosen to complement the property’s period features.

The completed photograph shows how contrasting materials can define an entrance. Use it as an example of the overall combination rather than assuming its dimensions or construction will suit every property.

Coordinate Steps and Planting Areas

Consider entrance steps, paths and planting edges alongside the main driveway. Their materials and levels affect how the complete space looks and functions.

If granite is proposed for several features, compare the finishes together. Agree which details are flush, raised or stepped during the site assessment.

Our granite borders, steps and planting risers guide explains these features in more detail.

Check Product Names and Materials

Record the exact paving range, colour, dimensions and finish in your quotation. A colour name containing “granite” does not by itself establish that a manufactured block is solid natural granite.

Our block paving service page includes Kilsaran colour and finish examples to help you create a shortlist.

Confirm current availability and suitability before installation, particularly when using an older brochure for inspiration.

Levels and Drainage Still Come First

The layout needs to work with the house entrance, surrounding paths and proposed drainage arrangements. Decorative bands should be coordinated with those requirements.

Ask whether the proposed paving is conventional or a specified permeable system. The product name and visible pattern alone do not describe the complete drainage design.

Read our driveway drainage guide for questions about falls, channels and supporting construction.

Do Patterns and Borders Affect the Price?

The selected product, driveway shape, cutting and finishing details affect material quantities and installation time.

Driveways 4 You’s €65–€120 per m² block paving guide includes excavation, waste removal, standard sub-base construction, paving blocks and installation labour.

Your quotation should identify the agreed pattern, border design and any additional features. Read our block paving cost guide for Dublin for example budgets and scope details.
